Commercial building inspection checklist
Routine walkthroughs help surface defects, document conditions and create follow-up tasks. This general operational checklist does not replace inspections required by law or licensed professionals.
1. Exterior and site
Walk entrances, parking areas, walkways, drainage points and exterior lighting. Note trip hazards, signs of water pooling, damaged doors and changes in access. Record issues with a location and photo where appropriate.
2. Interior areas
Review occupied spaces, restrooms, storage areas and common zones for visible leaks, damaged finishes, loose fixtures and housekeeping concerns. Confirm blocked exits and other immediate hazards are escalated under your facility's safety procedures.
3. Mechanical and utility spaces
Look for unusual noise, odors, visible leaks and obvious condition changes without opening energized or hazardous equipment. Specialized electrical, fire protection, elevator, boiler and similar checks must be performed by appropriately qualified personnel.
4. Record and follow up
For each finding, capture severity, owner, due date and corrective action. Compare results to the previous inspection and confirm that earlier deficiencies were actually resolved. Save results for the facility's records.
This guide is general information. Check manufacturer instructions, workplace procedures, local requirements, and qualified professionals for regulated, hazardous or specialized work.
